If your abuser suspects you are thinking about leaving you may be in danger so please consider your safety at all times.

Speak to your employer so that they know your situation. Employers have a duty to safeguard the wellbeing of staff: the statutory guidance accompanying the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 makes clear that employers should consider the impact of domestic abuse on their employees as part of their duty of care.

  • Tell a manager, your boss or Human Resources (HR) what is happening.
  • There is a chance your abuser may turn up at your workplace after you have left. Your employers should be made aware of that possibility, take steps to keep you safe and be ready to deal with it.
  • If you and your abuser work in the same place, your employers should be made aware of any potential issues and should take steps to keep you safe.

You will also need to update your records with your employer and arrange:

  • For your wages to be paid into a new bank account.
  • For next of kin information to be updated.
  • For pension information to be updated.

You may also need to talk with work colleagues to make them aware of the situation so that they don't give your address or contact details to anyone.
